BLOG CLOSED

Sup guys.

I hate to announce this, but I have finally decided to close this blog now because my life is getting busier and busier, I just can't write for this blog anymore.

Of course I still like metal, and will always do, it's just that I need to take my real-life more serious right now.

See you space cowboy (aren't I edgy enough because I'm referencing Cowboy Bebop here? :^) ).

I don't know why, but something feels particularly ominous in this drawing.

Speaking of it, I need to see more MLP drawings with unsettling and ominous atmosphere which are NOT grimdark.

Mannequin - Promo 2008 (2008)

(Bahasa Indonesia)

(English)

Many metalheads may know this band more as Plasmoptysis. In case you don't know, they originally formed in 2006 under the name Arasy, then changed their name into Mannequin, and eventually became Plasmoptysis by 2008. When they were still called Mannequin, they only released a promo album at the same year. That name sorta remembers me of Brodequin, by the way, and I need to know if these guys indeed sound like Brodequin.

The production has that gritty, yet still audible quality, similar to Brodequin's "Instruments of Torture". God, do I love it very much. The drummer also plays ridiculously intense blast beats similar to those played by Chad Walls. As with Chad Walls himself, the drummer accompanies those blast beats with pulverizing cymbal crashes, as though a nail bat hits your head so hard that your brain explodes out from your head. Sure, the snare has that thudding sound which is common among Indonesian bands, but the performance makes up for it.

The guttural vocals are also as brutal and unrelenting as those of Jamie Bailey's, although I wish it was deeper. The bass mostly follows the guitars, but there are times where it shows up and makes the music heavier. Speaking about the guitars, the guitarist plays a shitload of brutal death/grind riffs which would make Mike Bailey proud. Unlike Mike Bailey, however, he plays the chugging riffs more often, making the guitar play feel a little bit more like slamming brutal death metal than brutal death/grind.

The only thing I didn't like was the audio clips. I never like them since forever. I have no problem if they put them as part of the intro or at the beginning of at least one song. But if you listen to the track "Darah Tumbal", you'll be disappointed by how short the actual music is, compared to the audio clips put at the beginning and the end of the track.

Apart from the audio clips, I really love this album. Even if it's just a promo album, it's one of a few outstanding promo albums I ever know. If you're a fan of Brodequin, then search this album via Google. I guarantee you, this one won't disappoint you.

Broken Rain - Here Comes the Pain (2015) (English Only)

Broken Rain is a hard 'n' heavy band hailing from Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. They formed in 2006 as a cover band, but later they started writing their own material, with their first demo released in 2009. Six years later, they released their debut album, called Here Comes the Pain.

The production stands great. It has that old-school vibe which remembers me of those old Indonesian heavy metal bands. It also has a lot of dynamic range, which means the snare drum sounds strong. All the instruments can be heard clearly. The bass is played by Vladislav Gális. Although he doesn't try to impress anyone with his performance, it helps the music sound even heavier than it should be.

Drummer Branislav Končír spends his time playing mid-paced rhythms, so not much can be said about it. Filip Prašovský and Imrich Šimig both play the guitars. They play steel-heavy riffs which harken back to the old days of heavy metal. As with countless other heavy metal bands, they also throw in two melancholic songs, "Wanna Love My Girl" and "Tonight". The keyboards, also played by Imrich Šimig, add to the old-school atmosphere. I got to say, I love their performance.

Last but not least is the the performance of the vocalist Martin Rybár. His performance is best described as the catchiest and most old-school sounding performance. They throw me back to the glorious days of the 1980's.

One thing that surprised me was the bonus track "Broken Rain", which also happens to be my favorite track. It doesn't sound like the rest of the songs. Instead, it sounds like something a 60's rock band would come up with. They just cut the bullshit away and go simple in this song. I like it.

Although this album is not groundbreaking, it is still impressive in an old-school way. If you are a fan of old-school heavy metal, go check these guys. You won't be disappointed at all.

Sperma Reject - Hellcroot (2014)

Cover-nya WOW sekali... / So shocking, such controversy.
(Bahasa Indonesia)

(English)
I never like Indonesian brutal death metal bands which sing about porn and sex. Well, there are exceptions, like Total Anal Infection and Rezume, but they're very few and far between. You may call me a crybaby SJW for not liking those bands, but I'll have you know one thing; these bands sacrifice everything that defines Indonesian brutal death metal as you all know in order to achieve "br00tal" songwriting and gather as much adolescent kids as they can. In a nutshell, they are an Indonesian equivalent to Enmity.

In case you do not believe what I say, just check this band called Sperma Reject from Tangerang. They released their EP, Hellcroot on June 7th, last year. First, we'll start with the production. While it sounds nowhere as awful as Enmity, it still sounds remarkably awfully muffled. Perhaps, the audible bass is the only redeemable quality from it. The drumming is more awful than the production. You know how much Indonesian brutal death metal bands have a hollow thudding sound when it comes to the snare drum? This time, it's even worse. Since it's the loudest part of the instruments, you can predict just how awful it sounds. Add that to the Enmity-esque mentality ("BLAST ALL THE TIME"), and you get the drumming of Sperma Reject. But hey, nice job adding a lot of cymbals, though. I give you +1 for that.

The bass is perhaps the only thing I like from the EP. It's pretty audible and nice. Even if it only follows the guitars most of the time, it still sounds nice.

The vocals sound awfully generic and uninteresting. They sound indistinguishable from many other brutal death metal bands. The vocalist obviously does nothing to impress the listeners at all. Most Indonesian brutal death metal bands are known for the unique approach on vocals, so this one just disappoints me a lot. Worst of all is the guitar work. At first, it may sound pretty okay, given how talented Indonesian metal guitarists are. But if you listen to this EP from the beginning to the end, you will realize one thing; the guitars sound the same all over the time. Sure, they don't sound inane like Enmity, but the Enmity-esque mentality makes it sound kinda atrocious.

This is one proof that the Indonesian brutal death metal scene, not unlike many other metal scenes, has a bunch of poseurs which do not give shit about quality. Avoid this EP at all.

Unholiness - Unholy Promo 2013 (2013)

(Bahasa Indonesia)

(English)
With the exception of Haemorrhage, I don't usually like Spanish metal bands. Most of the time, they suck very much. The most province which is the offender is perhaps Catalonia.

But then I found Unholiness, which just made my day. Hailing from Zaragoza, Aragon, this blackened thrash band was pretty short-lived, being only active from 2012 to 2014. During their short lifespan, they only released one demo called Unholy Promo 2013. And I'd like to say that I am delighted with said demo, which I will review this time.

The production has that old-school sound which totally kicks ass. If you're especially a fan of old-school thrash metal, it won't take long for you to get used to Unholiness. The bass is also pretty prominent.

The music, however, kicks ass more than the production. The drummer Tadeo shows off his skills by playing fast-paced d-beats that sound like the gunfire of the assault rifle of Satan's soldiers. He also occasionally plays a few fills that, unfortunately, don't interest me much. I also wish the drumkit sounded louder. Other than those two problems, I still like Tadeo's performance.

Now we'll talk about the bass, which is performed by a guy called Edu. Despite his funny name, his performance is nothing to laugh about. The bass plays its own riffs, instead of just following the guitar work, making the music produced by Unholiness sound more groovy than it's supposed to be. God, do I love his performance.

Meanwhile, a guy called Rob performs the vocals here. His vocals consist of a sick, angry rasp which absolutely defines black metal. He really sounds like a devil coming out from Gehenna.

Best of all is the guitar work by Dario and Nacho. They both play lots of shredding riffs which harken back to the 80's thrash metal days. I especially like the solo in the title song.

Although this promo is very short, it is very recommended if you're into old-school thrash metal with some black metal elements. You can download it on their Bandcamp page below.

Permafrost - Transitory (2015)

Kira-kira seperti inilah katarsis terlihat jika divisualisasikan. / This is probably how catharsis would look like if it was visualized.
(Bahasa Indonesia)

(English)
Permafrost is a blackened doom metal band hailing from Alexandria, Virginia, U.S.A. They formed in 2009, but their activity remained unknown until January 16th of this year, when they released their debut album Transitory. You rarely ever find blackened doom metal bands nowadays. To top things off, nice blackened doom bands are also hard to find. Fortunately enough, Permafrost is more than nice.

The production of this album is pretty lo-fi, but it is by no means muffled. Thanks to the professional mixing (by Simon Callahan of Midnight Eye) and mastering (by Nikita Kamprad), everything can be heard clearly. Not only can you hear all the instruments clearly, the bass is also pretty prominent. A mixture between lo-fi production and professional mixing and mastering is pretty uncommon in the black metal scene, so I was happy when I heard this album, which just has that mixture.

The drums are played by a guy who goes with a pseudonym E (yes, only E, nothing more). He spends most of his time playing slow beats that are the trademark of blackened doom metal, sometimes accompanied with fills and cymbals which enrich the music, but there are times where he speeds up his performance and even performs blast beats which are primitive in nature. E's performance sounds like the furious rumbling of earth.

Andus Sapien is the one responsible for the bass. True to his pseudonym, his performance is pretty primitive (in a positive connotation). His bass performance has that dirty distorted sound, which is rarely heard from metal bands with prominent bass nowadays. He mostly follow the guitars, but since the bass is pretty prominent, he is also actually responsible for the primitive sound of Permafrost. Most metal bands nowadays tend to ignore the bass, so I was more than pleased when I heard the bass performance here.

Last but not least is the role of Hollow Lung both as a guitarist and a vocalist. His vocals consist of a rasp that contains profound anger and hatred. He sounds like a ghost who dwells in a forest for a very long time. Not only that, he also adds variety by pulling some clean vocals in the song "Nausea". Speaking about clean vocals, I forgot to tell you that there are also some clean vocals in the song "Oak", and they are performed by Simon Callahan of Midnight Eye (again). Normally, clean vocals in black metal would make you cringe, but here, they actually kinda work. They're emotional enough to bring forth catharsis. Now, let's move to the guitars. Hollow Lung plays lots of menacing riffs which sound like a mixture between Norwegian black metal and atmospheric black metal with some doom metal responsibility. He also plays some chugging riffs in the song "Nausea". These riffs are simply some of the best black metal riffs I have ever heard.

Although this album is pretty short, Transitory is probably the best blackened doom metal album ever in existence. I'm glad I finally found an actually awesome blackened doom band, as many blackened doom bands I discovered before were pretty much mediocre. Not only that, you can also grab this album for free from Permafrost's Bandcamp page.
